Random Blips (Page 2)

  • Oct 13, 2025

Got quite a lot of messages and replies from people who’ve been following these blips. I haven’t told anyone about them so I’m genuinely surprised there’s that much interest (and also fun to hear about the ways people got here).

Thanks for the many kind words!

Finished the initial two flower presses. Waiting for the autum leaves now!

Went for a quick scoping session! Photo is taken with my phone as I don’t have a astro camera laying around.

Rebels had a beautiful demo (demo at 15:50) at this year’s Deadline. Also really enjoyed Bitman & Ribbon’s Shader Lowdown (intro at 2:40).

I got a RCA Cosmac VIP laying around. Maybe it’s worth checking whether it could do some gfx? I haven’t found any online for this platform..

Update: Looks like Douglas Crawford created some effects via Chip-8 as part of a simple spreadsheet application.

Had a late-night hang with an old friend, which led to some common thoughts that I consider to be worth sharing

Most of what I work on or care about is so far from what others tend to focus on that it’s usually easier not to bring it up. The gap feels too wide, and the conversation never seems to go anywhere.

There’s rarely anyone in my circle who shares the same interests, and, unsurprisingly, the few who might are often in similar situations. Frankly, most people don’t really care about which specific issue you traced down to some obscure logic in a module, no matter how interesting the process was for you.

Puzzles like this are really only interesting to those involved in solving them. There’s no tangible result to show, no (visible) success to be proud of. Everything just returns to the status quo.

I do have a tendency to surround myself with people that have niche interests, no matter how far off they are from my own. Not because I would engage in whatever their passion is, but I’m drawn to the way they talk about what they care about. Listening to their enthusiasm, reading their thoughts, it’s like watching someone get lost in a world of their own.

I appreciate those fleeting moments when I meet someone else who’s been swimming in their own deep end.

I have been asked to make some banana bread, so here’s my first attempt at banana bread! It’s gluten-free - but holds up well. Will see how it scores tomorrow.

Scope is ready for action! The weather is not… yet! Still have to pick up a 12V battery anyway so there’s no rush.

A couple of spots I checked are great! A bit chilly but nothing I can do about that.

Picking up scoping again! I have been scouting out some promising observation spots over the past week and found a few that could work well.

I am probably going to take the 70mm refractor out for a quick dark-sky test once the skies clear up. Tomorrow night is looking hopeful! If one of the areas checks out I’ll probably return with a 120mm for some long exposures.

Also, there should be the annual meteor shower around Draco in a week or so - might be able to catch it!

Been sketching the sky for someone while we were waiting for pipelines to complete.
